A friend who helps his friend in time of difficulty is in fact a true friend. This may sound business-like but in a world where man feels lonely and deserted he needs someone to stand-by him. timely help. He needs someone to lessen his sadness and to increase his joys. A friend who does all this is a friend indeed. No doubt the present proverb has something of selfishness in it. It seems to weigh a friend only on the basis of his utility which cannot be the only test of true friendship. Sometimes even a true friend may not be able to help. Then in such cases he cannot be accused of indifference. Even a single consoling and encouraging word of a true friend is more valuable and useful. This word can give courage, hope and desire to face one's own problem independently with a resolute will to solve it on one's own. And this is more worth than the material help which makes us idle and dependents on others.
